Chapter 5
Riel was greeted by doggy breath and licks and nips to his chin as he woke. He automatically nuzzled against the greeting but it was abruptly taken away as the animal moved away. Its departure was signaled by the tap, tap, tap of tiny claws moving on the hardwood floor.
He opened his eyes and immediately shut them as pain assaulted his head. The events of the night before came crashing back into his memory. He remembered the pain of losing his patient. She had been in a car accident. Unbuckled in her car seat, she had flown through the windshield upon impact. Her blood had stained his gloved hands before she took her last breath. He remembered her tormented eyes begging him to stop the painâ and knowing that he could not. He remembered the twisting knot in his stomach when he had ended his shift. He remembered stopping at the liquor store to get a bottle to drown out the experience. He had not waited to leave the place before he had taken his first gulp. He remembered coming home to continue drowning in his sorrows. And he had indeed been drowning.
Until he looked into Donna's eyes. She had saved him from sinking into the dark abyss with her gentle smile and soft touch. He could not remember a recent time of him ever being vulnerable with someone. He wanted to be appalled at the fact that he had broken down in that manner in her presence, yet he could not summon the emotion. He had felt safe with her, a feeling he could not remember since childhood. Last he had felt like this was when he had been consoled by his nanny after his parents had finally divorced.
He rolled and groaned before he encountered a pillow that smelled like strawberries. He knew that the scent came from Donna's hair. He had smelled the scent the very first day they met and been craving the fruit ever since.
He simply laid there for a while and luxuriated in the smell before finally opening his eyes carefully. He spied a note indicating that he should drink the water and aspirin on the bedside table then. The note was signed by his tenant and indicated that he should shower in the master bathroom. Next to the note was a pair of sweatpants and a white T-shirt. His apartment keys were on top and he realized that she had gone on up to his place to get him the clothing. He tried to picture what she had seen when she had entered the space. Even though he had been living there for over 2 years, he had not added any personal touches, unlike she had done in the few weeks she was here.
Showered and feeling a lot better, he went into the kitchen to find Donna dressed simply in a tank top and blue jeans. She was humming and swaying slightly to a tune as she stirred something in a pan on the stove.
